Look across any magazine stand, and you’ll see a lot of teen girls on the covers of publications aimed at young female readers.

But how often do you see a Muslim girl on a magazine cover? Seldom, if ever.

That’s changing now with the launch of Muslim Girl Magazine. The first issue of the glossy magazine, edited by Ausma Khan of Evanston, arrived in January.

“There is such a definite need for something like this, something that portrays Muslim girls in a positive light,” said Amy Chaaban, a Richton Park resident and board member of the American Islamic Association mosque in Frankfort.

“There’s a dearth of information out there,” said Kahlid Mozaffar, of Orland Park, a board member with the Frankfort mosque and the co-chairman of the Southwest Interfaith Team.
