On September 15, 2005 The Advertiser reported, "The chairman of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils will chair a committee being set up to promote better communication between the Federal Government and the Muslim community. The establishment of the reference group follows a meeting between Prime Minister John Howard and members of the Muslim community last month. Multicultural Affairs Minister John Cobb said the group, to be chaired by Ameer Ali, was one of a series of initiatives to help the Muslim community build a common future with all Australians."
