On April 19, 2006 Muslim American Society reported, "This year's third annual Standing for Justice Banquet will be held Saturday, May 6 at the Sheraton Premiere at Tysons Corner... The Banquet, whose theme is 'Defending Our Image, Our Rights and Our Faith,' will honor the life and work of Sharifa Alkhateeb. Sister Alkhateeb, who died last year, was a pillar of the greater Washington Muslim community. She championed the causes of education, civic affairs, women's issues, family counseling and mediation, while all the time combating anti-Muslim bias. Sister Alkhateeb was an often sought adviser to national Muslim organizations and to Northern Virginia county and municipal government officials."
