On September 22, 2001, The Arizona Republic reported, "Nearly 3,000 people gathered in Phoenix today to remember Balbir Singh Sodhi, an Indian immigrant who died in a racially motivated shooting following the terrorist attacks on the East Coast. They were Sikh, Jew, Christian, Muslim and more, some with veils or turbans, others in suits and ties. They were black, white and every shade in between. Many never knew Sodhi. But that didn't seem to matter. They offered prayers, songs, compassion and sympathy. And in the silence in between came the sounds of grief."
