On September 18, 2001, The San Francisco Chronicle published the article "Bay Area Grieves; Thousands gather in remembrance." The article reported, "Speakers called for tolerance at home, and a measured response abroad. 'Our enemies have failed to divide us,' said Gov. Gray Davis, looking out on a sea of turbans, yarmulkes and priestly robes. 'We are one people. We are Americans. We don't care if you were born in the Mission District or the Middle East.'"
