On January 6, 2002, The Columbus Dispatch printed a letter to the editor from William Lane, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Columbus. He wrote, "As the statesman Edmund Burke observed, 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.' Our community is primarily composed of good people. The challenge for each person is to do something to maintain and strengthen an environment in which all of our wonderfully diverse groups can feel secure and be productive. Where there are differences, let each of us seek understanding and show respect for the opinions and dignity of others. We want to stress to the people of Columbus that we abhor this violence, that we condemn these acts of intimidation and that we support the unimpeded practice of all religions."
