On January 4, 2002, The Columbus Dispatch reported "FBI joins vandalism probe." It explained, "The FBI is investigating last weekend's vandalism at the Islamic Center on E. Broad Street, and authorities say the perpetrators could face penalties harsher than hate-crime laws provide. Federal agents have begun a 'conspiracy against rights' case in connection with the ransacking of the center." The article continued, "Central Ohio Muslims and others will hold a rally of solidarity at 3 p.m. today at the center. They want to show determination to restore the building and to assert that bigotry was behind the attack, organizers said."
