On December 30, 2001, The Council on American-Islamic Relations issued a press release stating "Ohio mosque vandalism prompts call for police protection." The statement called for "law enforcement authorities in that state to step up protection of Muslim institutions and businesses following an attack by vandals on the Islamic Center of Columbus. ... CAIR-Ohio has recorded several incidents of anti-Muslim harassment, threats, discrimination, and violence over the past three months." The press release reported two previous incidents of vandalism against Ohio mosques, including a car driven into the Greater Cleveland Islamic Center and window shot out at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo.
