On June 26, 2005 the Monterey Herald reported, "[The new mosque for the Islamic Society of Monterey] opened with a celebratory ceremony that drew about 100 people, both Muslims and non-Muslim community members who came along to join the festivities... The society has been around since the early 1960s, and boasts about 300 members, according to Anis Alhadi, a member. Area followers of the Islamic faith had previously met in a little building off Fremont Boulevard. Prior to that, the group had prayed in an assortment of locations."
