On October 24, 2003 NZCity News reported that "there is controversy between Muslims belonging to the Christchurch Mosque as a charitable trust suspected of having have links with al Qaeda offers to help fund the mosque's proposed trust. Muslim Association spokeswoman Ola Kamel is concerned that members of the Muslim community have written to various MPs about the offer from the Saudi Arabian-based Al Haramain Islamic Foundation. Ms Kamel says that while she is against the offer, the group should have discussed it among themselves before making their concerns public."
