On September 19, 2005 The Arab American News reported, "Members of the Islamic House of Wisdom [in Dearborn Heights] were shocked when they came to work on September 14th to find their mosque vandalized... The vandal caused mass destruction in and outside the mosque, breaking the mosque's street sign, the glass doors, exterior lighting, and windows and even threw paint on walls. During the attack security alarms alerted the Dearborn Heights Police Department and the suspect was arrested. The suspect... was described by police as a 27-year-old, semi-homeless, frustrated man who was drunk and wandering. He remained in jail Thursday on a felony charge of malicious destruction of property. Police claim that he didn't attack the mosque out of bigotry. Detective Lt. Jeff Seipenko said, Stearns 'was ticked off' but 'it really had nothing to do with ethnic' hate. The mosque 'just happened to be where he was walking.' The incident has not been labeled a hate crime, but an FBI agent at the mosque was looking into possible civil rights violations."
