On September 2, 2005 the Chicago Sun-Times reported, "Islam champions the poor, so Muslims conducting business in the struggling neighborhoods have to give back to those communities, Mosque Cares officials said at the opening of their annual convention at the Hyatt Regency Hotel [in Chicago] on Thursday. 'When America hurts, we hurt,' attendee Zubaydah N. Madyun said as volunteers began collecting batteries, flashlights and canned goods for Hurricane Katrina victims. 'We have to do more than pray and just feel bad,' said Na Jee Ali, son-in-law of Mosque Cares' Imam W. Deen Mohammed... Every year Mohammed's meeting coincides with the convention sponsored by the Islamic Society of North America, which is mostly made up of South Asian and Arab Americans. Mohammed is expected to join ISNA officials and President Bush aide Karen Hughes at a news conference this morning to kick off the four-day extravaganza at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont."
