On March 18, 2004 the People's Daily ran an Xinhua article that reported, "More than 130 monks from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan jointly staged a Chinese Buddhist music performance in Macao Wednesday night. This is the first time for Buddhist monks across the Taiwan Straits to jointly set up a troupe to perform the Chinese Buddhist music in Macao following their successful debuts in Taiwan last month. 'Buddhism and Buddhist music in China's mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao has the same root and preaches for harmony and peace. We hope the performance of Buddhist music will help maintain world peace and strengthen the blood ties among Chinese compatriots,' said Venerable Sheng Hui, vice president of the Chinese Buddhism Association and head of the troupe."
