A small step toward world peace.

That is the mission of Mitzvah Day, an annual coming together of three faith communities to perform deeds of service across Western New York.

But when you look at the numbers, Mitzvah Day is anything but small.

More than 300 volunteers from the Islamic Society of Niagara Frontier, Majid Nu’man Mosque, Temple Beth Zion and Westminster Presbyterian Church joined Sunday in 27 community service projects at more than 20 locations.

The volunteers realized the common ideals of their faiths by helping people and organizations in need.

Lavera Johnson, one of the project leaders for Westminster, stopped by several of the sites.

“We’d like to be seen as an example,” Johnson said. “This is what Buffalo can be when people join together and work with each other.”
