On May 23, 2004 The Detroit News reported, "Politics and religion are co-mingling on a massive scale this year, setting up what increasingly looks like a November referendum on changing American morality. Nowhere is this intersection of church and state more evident than in Michigan, where experts can’t recall a similar time of constant debate over morally tinged issues — including same-sex marriage, late-term abortion, the death penalty and affirmative action. The debate even includes whether Catholic leaders like Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, a presidential candidate, should be refused Communion because they disagree with church policy against abortion. While some say it’s high time the nation had a healthy debate on these issues, others warn that mixing religion and politics could be bad for both."
