Several prominent Michigan Muslims on Tuesday condemned the failed attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas, calling it part of a war against the spirit of Islam.

Dawud Walid, executive director of the state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said it's important for mainstream Muslims to speak for the vast majority of the world's 1.5 billion Muslims and against the "minuscule percentage" of those who subvert the religion's teachings.

"Murdering innocent civilians is making war against the Quran, the very foundation of Islam, for God says in the Quran to kill one innocent person is like killing all of mankind," said Walid, who spoke to reporters at the chapter's office in the Detroit suburb of Southfield.
