On Thursday December 13, 2001, The Orlando Sentinel reported that the University of Central Florida hosted the "United We Stand" memorial on the three month anniversary of September 11. "Speakers from various religions and backgrounds took the stage in front of an American flag that stretched from the ceiling to the floor." One of the speakers was Richard Lapchick, a world-renown crusader against racism. "'While there has been an anti-Muslim, anti-Arab feeling,' Lapchick said, 'we've come together as one in ways I've only dreamed about'... Jasbir Singh Bhatia, 60, a Sikh originally from India, said he attended the event wearing his traditional turban to express solidarity."
