On May 23, 2002 The Washington Post reported that "to make it clear they want to be players in local politics, members of the Muslim Council of Howard County [Maryland]... [a] group that seems determined to become more involved in the area's social, business and political life... recently held fundraisers [for high-profile local political figures]... The group plans to register as many voters as it can. Area elected officials are beginning to take notice."
