Angela Nicolini stood to the side as representatives of various religious faiths took turns approaching the microphone to pray.

Afterward, she was pleased with how the Abilene Interfaith Council’s participation in the National Day of Prayer had gone. She was especially pleased that the group had been able to show “what it means to promote tolerance and understanding among different religions.”

An estimated 40 to 50 people attended Thursday’s noon event in Minter Park, off of Cypress Street in downtown Abilene.

During the event, representatives of Anglican, Muslim, Protestant, Buddhist, Unitarian-Universalist, Roman Catholic and Baha’i faiths took part in what has become an annual event. After praying, bread was broken and shared among participants.
