Manchester’s Muslim Mayor Praises City’s Diversity

On July 7, 2005 the South Manchester Reporter reported, "Manchester's first Muslim Lord Mayor attended a reception in his honour held by the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community at their centre in Levenshulme. Lord Mayor Councillor Mohammed Afzal Kahn said: 'I have always enjoyed the organisational skills and dedication of the Dawoodi Bohras and I am sorry I missed the opportunity to meet their leader in India earlier this year. Manchester is a great city and as its first citizen, I am amazed by its diversity. Yesterday, I was at a Hindu temple. This morning, at a cathedral and now I am in this mosque.' Councillor Afzal Khan is also the city’s first Asian and youngest Lord Mayor."
