On December 24, 2003 The Portsmouth Herald reported that U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman visited the Seacoast Community Church to help serve meals to homeless people and others in need. He made Tuesday’s visit to the church to meet with voters and "to reflect on the role faith plays in the lives of ordinary citizens and the U.S. government. During a brief speech before the assembled media corps, Lieberman said that, 'at this difficult time in history,' the American people 'must reaffirm our birthright of religious freedom'and 'honor the constructive role faith in all its forms plays... Instead of casting religion far afield from politics, Lieberman encouraged religious pluralism, noting the country was founded on a promise of freedom of religion for all people, 'not freedom from religion,' he said. If elected president, he said, he would never impose his religious beliefs on others, but would also 'never be afraid to give thanks to God' and work with clergy members when necessary."
