On August 3, 2006 BBC News reported, "Plans to turn a Leicester education centre into a mosque may be turned down after complaints from nearby residents. The Northfield Centre has been used as a place of worship since April - even though the building does not have planning permission for that purpose. Now a formal application has been put forward but city councillors are being advised by planners to reject it. Residents said extra traffic had made parking difficult but the centre said disruption was kept to a minimum. Stephen Thompson, city councillor for Humberstone and Hamilton, said: 'This is a residential area and there is no planning permission for this kind of use. 'We have had complaints about the number of cars and the noise at early and late hours. 'There are other areas of the city which could be used for a new mosque with less disruption to those living nearby.' Organisers at the mosque have so far declined to comment."
