KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sbu Ndebele has wished all Hindus a happy and blessed Deepavali.

Deepavali is a Hindu festival celebrating the victory of good over evil. The word Deepavali is a Sanskrit word meaning an "array of lights."

Throughout the province and the world, Hindus will celebrate this joyous and auspicious festival on Friday through the use of lights and lamps which adorn homes.

Apart from their aesthetic beauty, these lamps represent the pureness of one's "inner light" and the constant quest to achieve universal compassion and love which alone brings true inner joy and peace.

"Therefore, on behalf of the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal, we take this opportunity of wishing all Hindus a joyous and blessed Deepavali," said Premier Ndebele Thursday.

The richness of the province's heritage, he said, is aptly reflective of the diversity of the millions of South Africans who reside in KwaZulu-Natal.
