On March 6, 2004 The Kansas City Star reported, "Broadway Baptist Church wants to join the national debate on gay marriage by arranging 'A Day of Holy Unions' for same-sex couples free of charge March 27. In making the announcement, the church stated the action is being taken 'in celebration and solidarity with our friends in San Francisco, Oregon, Massachusetts and New York and others fighting on the front lines for justice and equality for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people.' The Rev. Marcia Fleischman said the unions are not the same as a legal marriage ceremony. The 10- to 15-minute ceremony will involve an exchange of vows, Scriptures, a blessing and a prayer, and each couple will receive a certificate of holy union, said Fleischman, co-pastor with the Rev. Paul Smith at Broadway, 39th Terrace and Broadway. The church began performing these ceremonies about five years ago, and the pastors have conducted about 20 of them, she said."
