On February 9, 2006 the Indo-Asian News Service reported, "Hindus should be sensitive to the aspirations of India's minorities but Muslims must also take steps to shun extremism, according to noted jurist Soli Sorabjee. Making a forceful case for nation building, Sorabjee, one of India's most respected members of the legal fraternity, hit out at growing intolerance which he said had affected both the Hindu and Muslim communities. 'The majority community should be sensitive to the rights of minority community. The majority community should understand their (minorities') concerns,' Sorabjee said, delivering the ninth Zakir Hussain Memorial Lecture at the Indian International Centre here Wednesday evening. 'The majority community must appreciate that Muslims are as much citizens of our country and not second class citizens,' he went on, explaining how a sense of belonging to India the minorities had felt in the wake of India's independence in 1947 had over a period of time degenerated to a feeling of insecurity."
