On August 4, 2003 the Alameda Times reported that "since the [Iu Mien] community center's grand opening July 19, people have held combination Buddhist/Tao religious ceremonies and Mien language classes for children at the small house in front of the center... Saechao said he hopes the center will bring together the 8,000 Iu Mien scattered throughout the Bay Area, 5,000 of whom live in Oakland [CA]. The first of its kind in the United States, the center is a place where Iu Mien can practice and teach their traditions, he said."
