"If you want to see what Muslim-Americans truly represent, go to the UMMA Community Clinic and you will see it there." - Rep. Maxine Waters, Democrat-CA

A few short years ago, a handful of aspiring physicians who were also members of the Muslim Student Association at UCLA set out to make the world a better place.

As the adage goes, they dreamed globally but started locally.

Based on the ideals of brotherhood and compassion espoused by their Islamic religion, the young doctors formed UMMA Community Clinic: a God-send to the needy and neglected of south Los Angeles.

The abbreviation UMMA stands for University Muslim Medical Association, but the word also means "community" in Arabic - and caring for the local community is what UMMA Clinic is all about.
