On September 21, 2002 The Buffalo News reported that "an Islamic group that owns the former Masten Park detention center [in NY] is seeking city permits to convert the cavernous facility into a religious campus. Tentative plans call for the complex near Timon Street to be transformed into a mosque, school and boarding school. The application was submitted Sept. 12 and will be reviewed by city permit and inspection officials over the next two weeks, said David Krug, a city planning coordinator."
