On January 6, 2004 The Detroit News reported, "The Islamic Center of America plans to unveil its gleaming new $12 million mosque in Dearborn this summer — part of an Arab-American religious and cultural facility that the group said will eventually be the largest in North America. The mosque marks the center’s expansion beyond the building it has been using in Detroit for 40 years. With 3,000 members and constant demand for community activities throughout the year, the center has outgrown the old building at Joy and Greenfield... The new mosque is part of a 120,000-square-foot complex planned for the site. When complete, it will include, besides the mosque and the existing Muslim American Youth Academy, an auditorium, library and community center. The Islamic Center’s planned complex is designed to meet the growing needs of Metro Detroit’s booming Arab-American community. Other projects are also in the works, such as a $12.8 million Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, which is expected to open in October."
