On September 17, 2005 the Portsmouth Herald reported, "They have sent money, they have sent supplies, and on Friday night a small group at North Church sent their prayers to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Interfaith service brought together spiritual leaders from local Christian, Jewish and Baha’i organizations on what was declared a National Day of Prayer for hurricane victims. 'Let us not forget that there are people in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama... who need all that we can do. And what we first can do is pray,' said the Rev. Dawn Shippee, North Church’s pastor. Shippee and other leaders reflected on images in the news and stories from the Gulf Coast, each noting that strength of spirit is what the victims need most."
