On July 19, 2004 The Huddersfield Daily Examiner reported, "Religious leaders are staging a march through Huddersfield to show their opposition to the British National Party. Seven faiths, including Muslims and Anglicans, will be represented when the Walk of Friendship is held on Saturday, July 31. Organisers said they 'abhorred' views expressed by members of the far-Right BNP in a TV documentary last Thursday. Police are investigating after BNP leader Nick Griffin was heard to describe Islam as a 'wicked, vicious faith' and a 'dragon to be slayed.' A BNP candidate in this year's elections for Bradford Council spoke of his dream of firing a machine-gun at worshippers as they left mosques. The July 31 march sets off from the Muslim Community Centre in Clare Hill at 10 a.m. A statement by organisers Huddersfield Interfaith Council said: 'The comments are abhorrent in today's multi-cultural Britain. Islam promotes peace and harmony between different communities'...They will call at Huddersfield Parish Church and the Hindu Temple in Zetland Street, before finishing at the Sikh Temple in Springwood."
