On February 29, 2004 The Northwest Indiana Times reported, "As much as many people would like to sweep it back into the closet, the gay marriage debate has swept the nation -- and the fallout didn't spare Northwest Indiana this week... On Thursday, Jeff Miner, an Indianapolis pastor who leads the Interfaith Coalition on Nondiscrimination, reminded lawmakers that America is a country that protects the rights of unpopular minorities from the 'tyranny of the masses.' 'Remind us that there was a time when slavery was considered an institution established by You, when allowing women to vote was considered contrary to the Bible, when interracial marriages were believed to threaten the very foundations of the American family, when left-handed children were thought to be under the influence of the devil,' Miner said."
