On September 22, 2000, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that "members of an 85-member interfaith group will gather at First United Methodist Church, 1630 Hinman, Evanston, for 'Death Sentence 2000,' a forum on the fairness of human executions. 'This is the largest interfaith (group that) has been gathered to address the whole death penalty issue. And it is unique in the response from all the faith communities,' said organizer Joe Monahan, a parishioner at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic church in Evanston...'We're hoping to ask people to sign a resolution to let Gov. Ryan know we support the moratorium and support a national moratorium,' Monahan said. 'We hope people will look at the death penalty from a faith-based perspective.'"
