On December 13, 2004 the Reno Gazette-Journal/Associated Press reported, "spiritual leaders have formed the Interfaith Council in response to anti-Semitic vandalism at a Jewish temple at Lake Tahoe. Temple Bat Yam Rabbi Jonathan Freirich told about 150 people at a Hanukkah ceremony over the weekend that the council will deal in matters relating to all forms of faith relations in the Lake Tahoe region... The vandalism, discovered last Tuesday, included Nazi symbols and the words 'die Jew' on the front door of the temple. Also found were Nazi symbols on highway signs throughout the South Shore. The vandalism at the temple was the first time in the synagogue’s 22-year history that it had experienced anti-Semitic threats."
