On April 7, 2006 the California Chronicle reported, "Assembly Speaker pro Tem Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/Daly City), in his latest effort to fight federal legislation targeting immigrants, today brought together a multi-faith delegation of Bay Area religious leaders to protest the anti-immigrant, discriminatory HR 4437... [This bill] would make it a felony to be in the U.S. illegally, impose harsh new penalties on businesses that employ illegal immigrants, and even require faith organizations to check the legal status of the people they help. The bill would also fund the building of a wall along the US-Mexico border. 'I have drafted a state resolution to officially declare California’s opposition to such anti-immigrant, anti-worker federal legislation,' said Yee. 'We should not use any state resources to enforce such discriminatory laws.' As a result of 34% decrease in legal immigration (US Department of Homeland Security), 'unauthorized' immigration has increased. There are an estimated 2.4 million 'unauthorized' immigrants in California, a majority coming from Mexico, Latin American countries, and Asia."
