On September 17, 2004 Yahoo/ PR Newswire reported, "a group of clergy, representing religious leaders from around the state, announced today that they are starting the People's Pilgrimage to Overcome Poverty, an interfaith movement to raise awareness about poverty during this election cycle and beyond... For the third year in a row, the number of Americans living in poverty grew. According to the Census Bureau, an additional 1.2 million people were poor last year, bringing to four million the number of people who've dropped below the poverty line since 2000. Of these, 1.3 million are children... The People's Pilgrimage to Overcome Poverty will spread their message across the state through events and activities.
