On January 15, 2005 The Providence Journal reported, "moving to build on what has been a cordial but informal relationship, a broad coalition of faith groups from across Rhode Island has come together to underscore their relationship in a more formal way. The Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition -- bringing together leaders of most of the state's faith groups including Christians, Universalist-Unitarians, Jews, Buddhists and Muslims -- started to make itself known last month when their various leaders asked their churches, synagogues, temples and mosques to put their faith into action by donating money for the Interfaith Dire Emergency Fund, to help people with their heating bills, and canned goods to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. The Rev. John E. Holt, executive minister of the Rhode Island State Council of Churches, said that while the founders expect to see the group eventually sponsoring forums to help promote understanding among the various faiths, they saw the food drive as a tangible example of what they can do together."
