Is there such a thing as too much tolerance?
It's a question University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer and others will explore at an interfaith community breakfast on the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Frohnmayer will explore "The Limits and Depths of Toleration in a Free & Diverse Society." Frohnmayer's familiarity with the issue ranges from his stint as Oregon attorney general, when followers of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh in Central Oregon were charged with criminal offenses, to a more recent controversy involving anti-Christian political cartoons in the Insurgent student newspaper at the UO.
The breakfast is sponsored by the Lane Institute of Faith & Education, a program of Two Rivers Interfaith Ministries. Dan Bryant, pastor at First Christian Church and a founder of the institute, said a spate of recent issues, both locally and globally, prompted organizers to take a look at the limits of religious tolerance.
