On April 3, 2004 INDOlink reported, "Thousands of non-resident Indians (NRIs), across the United States are getting involved election process, not for the American Presidential poll due in November, but for the general elections of the Lok Sabha back home next month. These folks may not have a vote, but the Indian Diaspora indeed has a clout, which most political parties are out to cash in. The latest campaign strategy for both the Diaspora groups – Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as well the Congress - is to reach out to the families of the 66,000 Indian students studying in the United States. Though it may not make a difference to the final result, but it does reflect the new political activism of the NRI and a sharpening ideological divide beyond Indian shores."
