Indian Festivals Raise Cultural Awareness

On September 10, 2000, The Virginian-Pilot reported on "India Fest," an event held last weekend at Old Dominion University's Webb Center. "Papaiah Murthy, an anesthesiologist who founded the Asian Indians of Hampton Roads, which has organized the festival since 1996, said the organization's main focus is cultural awareness...'Our objective is to get the Indian community and the local community as a whole to attend this event,' he said...Some of the cultural activities included demonstrations of the Bharat Natyam and Manipuri dances; a fashion show that displayed traditional Asian-Indian attire, including a sari demonstration; and musical recitals. Information included in the festival's program guide highlighted various achievements by Asian Indians."
