On June 14, 2003 The Arizona Republic reported that a "relatively low-key holiday, Flag Day has gained more attention since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the war in Iraq. The symbol of patriotism is more visible, especially among non-native citizens and other ethnic and religious groups. They see the flag as a shield against hate and a way to feel connected to their new country... Immigrants seem extremely attached to American principles, said Judy Flanagan, a Phoenix immigration lawyer. The process for naturalization is long and time-consuming... 'They made a choice to come to this country,' Flanagan said, 'I hear so many of them say, 'I feel free in this country; I have opportunities in this country.' They had to earn the right to become U.S. citizens; it wasn't an accident of birth.'"
