On December 28, 2004 The Miami Herald reported, "In the wake of a massive earthquake and tsunamis that swept across the Indian Ocean, South Floridians with roots in South Asia worked Monday to find facts and send help to their devastated homelands. South Floridians sought news through 24-hour coverage on Indian satellite channels. As the hours went by, they learned the extent of the destruction, but not the more personal, vital details: who was spared and who wasn't.... A Sunday evening gathering at Iyengar's Pembroke Pines home became an impromptu news exchange. Nearly all 20 families invited had relatives in Tamil Nadu."
