On August 7, 2006 The Standard reported, "Muslim clerics have vowed to end female genital mutilation (FGM) in Moyale District. Twenty-five imams said most communities still practiced FGM erroneously believing that it was a religious rite. Led by Sheikh Abdinasir Haji Hassan, the local Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims chairman, they said the practice was unlawful in the Islamic teachings, which prohibits harming of a human being. 'We regret that our communities practice the vice, yet it is clear in the Koran that the practice is contrary to Islamic teachings,' said Sheikh Hassan. The imams, representing mosques from four divisions in the district, were speaking at an anti-FGM workshop for Muslim and Christian leaders."
