On July 14, 2005 The Hingham Journal reported, "Hingham was one of the first towns to sign on as a 'No Place for Hate' community in 2001. The town was recertified as such in May as part of a growing effort to build more respectful and safe communities. The 'No Place for Hate' effort creates a level of awareness for the community that hatred, anti-Semitism, and lack of tolerance do exist and that through education a mutual understanding can develop, according to Barbara Marcus, who co-chairs Hingham's NPFH committee with her husband, Mitch. 'We try to be pro-active in our programming to raise awareness about diversity and tolerance and to promote respect for, and understanding of, differences,' Marcus said. 'Through various types of programs we hope to reach a cross-section of people.'"
