On April 25, 2004 The Democrat and Chronicle reported, "Rainbowed bodies of color danced and chased each other in the parking lot of the Hindu Temple of Rochester Saturday afternoon. Covered in colored powder, called gulal, about 100 people celebrated Holi — a Hindu festival of spring — by dancing, laughing and eating... Holi, known as a festival of colors, is celebrated widely in northern India, designating joy, the arrival of spring, harvest and fertility. It also is a symbolic commemoration centered on a legend from Hindu mythology about an arrogant king who repeatedly tried to kill his son for worshiping a lord."
