On March 9, 2006 The Standard reported, "The Hindu Council of Kenya has donated about Sh5 million worth of foodstuff to famine ravaged areas. The council has also appealed to its branches and member institutions to heed the national call for famine relief. The secretary general Sunil Shah, told The Standard that the project mostly targeted schools in drought-stricken areas. 'Our theme for this programme is "Education for food". The drought situation has disrupted the education,' he said. Children in drought stricken areas of North Eastern and Eastern provinces have been walking long distances in search of food and water and in the process dropping out of school. He said the "Food for Education" project would ensure that food reached the children in need."
