On October 24, 2004 Gulf Daily News reported, "Hundreds of minority Hindus yesterday sang and danced in the streets throughout Muslim-majority Bangladesh to commemorate the story of the goddess Durga's slaying of a demon king. Others gathered around rivers, ponds and lakes to immerse clay idols of the lion-riding, 10-armed goddess in the festival called Durga Puja, which celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Festivities in the past two years have been subdued because of reported attacks on Hindus. Only 10 per cent of Bangladesh's 140 million people are Hindus, while 88 [percent] of the population are Muslims and the rest Buddhists or Christians."
