"Gods, gods, gods," said theologian Rita Sherma, in a mildly exasperated tone. "Gods with an 's,' " she said.

That is the most common misperception in the non-Hindu world, she said: that Hindus believe in more than one god.

"We believe in the one God who is both personal and beyond personal," she said, setting the record straight. "That God has many powers and energies that we try to have communion with and harmonize with."

Sherma, who is the founder and president of the Center for Convergence Spirituality in Casa Grande, Ariz., gave the keynote speech Sunday at the Interfaith Brotherhood/Sisterhood Committee of Bergen County, 24th annual brunch for the local Baha'i, Catholic, Hindu, Islam, Jain, Jewish, Protestant and Sikh communities.
