On November 18, 2002 India-West Newspaper reported that "U.S.-based [Hindu] temples and the priests who man them have become... non-traditional, and no one is complaining... many of these houses of worship currently have their own Web sites and toll-free numbers, and the priests, at least some of them, their own PCs and cell phones. From Hawaii to New York, from Alaska to Houston, there are some 420 Hindu temples, whose distinct architecture has changed the landscape of the U.S. and redefined many a neighborhood. Built entirely with donations from the congregation, many of the temples today serve as both places of worship as well as community centers to the nearly one million-strong Hindu community."
