On September 2, 2005 the Romford Recorder reported, "Two separate societies are campaigning for a Hindu temple and community centre to be built in Havering. The Hindu Society of Havering and the Havering Hindu Welfare Society are both working independently to raise funds to get a temple in the borough. Both societies hope the temple will also act as a social centre, where people from all faiths from across the community can meet. The groups held fundraising events last Friday (August 26) in which they also celebrated the birth of Lord Krishna. Ashok Shah, the general secretary of the Hindu Society of Havering, said: 'We want to create a temple which will be open to everyone so that people of different faiths can worship there.'"
